This video made me laugh so much! Everything the narrator said about modern dance concerts are so true! At 2:25 when he was describing why dancers choose movement he said "sometimes the dancers just like that move", which I totally agree with! There have been multiple times that I have no idea why I put a movement into a dance, I wasn't inspired by an emotion or anything deep like that, I just like the move. I thought this video really summed up the way a "non-dancer" audience member would feel during a concert because my mom always tells me her perspective on a concert and it's totally different from mine because I understand the efforts put behind choreography while all she sees is walking dancers on stage.
I posted earlier but it didn't go through. but here is another one. I liked the video! I liked how he explains that modern is different in the viewers and dancers eyes. Also the different types of modren dance such as Lyrical, Aggressive, and other types of movements. I also like how he says that your job as the audience is to interpret the meaning or your meaning behind the dance and that what ever you see and another person can see the dance differently from you. I really liked this video it showed me modern through a different perspective or idea.
oops..I didn't know you posted on the first video by giving feedback. Sorry! So here is a more detailed response to go along with my first comment:
I liked how during the narration, there was a dancer narrating the words with her body. It stood out to me because when he would describe famous modern dancers who have influenced modern dance, you could physically visualize how they have influenced modern dance and if you weren't familiar with thier work, you could see it first hand through the dancer. One of my favorite parts was when he said that some dances are so abstract that they can't be defined and may not even have rhythm which is very true. Another point that stood out to me was that some dances have choreography where all the dancers do is roll around, which you could see as the dancer was demonstating. Although this was a humorous attempt at describing modern dance, it really got down to the core of what modern is and definitely enlightened me.
Once again, sorry I didn't read that old comment from you earlier :)
I must say, the narrator helped to give audience members a more clear understanding of what modern dance IS NOT as opposed to what it SHOULD BE. Somewhat like Meghan, I find myself having to explain specific movement choices simply because it may not fit into certain dance criteria. I think they (non-dancers) should try and experience a modern dance performance from our perspectives because essentially, dance is not just about being able to execute a perfect pirouette turn or appearing as if you were a gymnast. All movement does not have to be the same, because if it was then you would not have as much variety and genres of dance as we do today. In all, I thought this video gave great examples of what not to expect at a modern dance concert as well as things you don't necessarily HAVE to expect, but things that could make a performance outstanding and unique in a way that people can remember for being that way- outstanding and unique.
I liked the video and thought that it was a great attempt at educating and getting the students engaged in the performance. I do not feel that it would have been taken as seriously without the demonstration because it was humorous and people, especially children, respond better to humor. From 0:15 to 0:44, we see the dancer moving in ways that are characteristic of certain forms or choreographers like gymnastics and Alvin Ailey. I felt that it helped show the students how diverse or dynamic modern dance can be.
I thought this was a good humors way to try to explain to people who aren't dancers, those who don't have the knowledge of what it takes to do all those jumps or flips. I thought the dancing better explained the words the guy was talking about and vice versa.I think it also did a good job on showing how there are different ways or styles of dancing modern dance. Also explaining some of the reasons why we do the things we do and saying that everything we do might have a meaning behind it or sometimes it just doesn't.
